NEW YORK, NY- Favorable views of the US among Indians have declined since last year amid US President Donald Trump’s actions and rhetoric towards India, according to an international survey by the US-based Pew Research Center.

The survey, found that 45 per cent of Indians held a favorable view of the US this year, down from 54 per cent in 2025, while 31 per cent expressed an unfavorable opinion.

Only 18 per cent of Indians approved of Trump’s tariff policies, which imposed duties of up to 50 per cent on some Indian exports before the US Supreme Court blocked them.

Confidence among Indians that Trump would do the right thing in world affairs also fell sharply, from 52 per cent last year to 39 per cent this year, while 36 per cent said they had no confidence in him.

The survey also found that 47 per cent of Indians believed the US interfered in the affairs of other countries a fair or great deal, while 30 per cent disagreed. The percentages do not total 100 because some respondents either had no opinion or did not respond.

Despite the decline, India’s perception of the US remained more favorable than the median across the 36 countries surveyed. Pew said global views of the US had worsened, with a median 57 per cent expressing an unfavorable opinion and 37 per cent a favorable one. Across all countries surveyed, 23 per cent expressed confidence in Trump to do the right thing in world affairs, while 76 per cent did not.

Among Indians, 54 per cent said the US government respected personal freedoms. (IANS)
