Establishment of SAARC human rights Mechanism

२५ शुक्रबार , चैत्र २०७३८ बर्ष अगाडि

South Asia is a complex region given its varied commonalities and diversities. The idea of SAARC as a leading regional forum has highlighted the need and urgency to learn and work with ideas coming across the boundary of the member nations. SAARC, like the practices in other regions has been trying to find answers to regional challenges in their shared customs, values, cultures and practices. One of the major challenges faces in the region is the varied economic growth trajectory scripted by each country at different stages of their history. The priority of having good economic data has eclipsed the debate on development models giving rise to the much highlighted contentious statistics. Shrinking the space for various voices from being expressed is a part of the adopted development model that severely undermines human right. All the governments of the region follow their own ways to address and suppress various human rights issues. Despite the challenges many efforts are in motion demanding establishment of a Regional Human Rights System that takes into account regional considerations for the protection and enjoyment of human rights by billion plus population of the region.

Shared learning on various issues like rights of immigrants, rights of religious minorities, and right to health need urgent attention will strengthen domestic institutions. There are documented cases of human rights violation involving more than one country of the region. Such cases will also have a forum in the form of a regional body to give them justice. Establishment of a regional human rights mechanism will provide a framework for the governments and the existing vibrant civil society groups of the region to play their role in universalizing human rights. On behalf of People’s Vigilance Committee on Human Rights (PVCHR), I appeal to all the Statesmen, Policy makers and Civil Society Groups to consider establishment of a South Asian Regional Human Rights framework. Let there be a beginning.
