Stories Still Convey Chairman’s Virtues

Chairman Kim Jong Il (1942-2011) was known for his unusual humanity.

What Govind Says
In July 1981, an airliner took off Pyongyang for the capital of a country. Among the passengers was Govind Narain Srivastava, an Indian on his return home after a DPRK visit. He was secretary general of the Asian Regional Institute of the Juche Idea.
Before departure he felt somewhat ill. With his condition going from bad to worse, he could not but stop at an airport of a country halfway and he was immediately carried to a hospital.
A few days later, he unexpectedly found that a DPRK official visited him together with a medical worker.
He was told that Kim Jong Il, aware Govind was hospitalized on his way back home, made sure a competent doctor and precious medicines were sent to him. Soon after that, he took a measure to help his son go to his bedside, saying that while in hospital Govind would miss his son in India.
Govind was so moved by the Chairman’s great humanity.
“There is no greater happiness for a man as a social being than to live enjoying love and trust. Moreover, when you earn love and trust from the revered great man, you can’t translate that happiness and glory into words,” he said.

Affection Shown to Wael
In November 1994, Wael Barakat, a member of the Egyptian embassy in the DPRK, was taken to Pyongyang Friendship Hospital after sustaining an unexpected accident.
He was in a critical condition. Some of his organs were damaged so severely that medical workers balked at operating on him. Even his mother who rushed to Pyongyang after being told about him accepted his life-threatening condition with resignation.
It was at such a critical time that Kim Jong Il took every possible measure to rescue him.
Accordingly, a powerful medical team was formed with a dozen of medical workers, latest medical equipment and medicines were unsparingly allocated, and treatment continued round the clock.
After fighting for his life for over a month, the patient finally regained consciousness and came to leave the hospital in good health later.
Having experienced a miraculous recovery of his son, Wael Barakat’s mother extended her heartfelt thanks to Kim Jong Il.
“His Excellency Kim Jong Il, the great leader of the Korean people, showed my son deep parental affection,” she said. “He is really a fatherly leader who embraces and takes good care of all people.”
