By Shant Shrestha People’s Review columnist and veteran academician Narayan Prasad Mishra has recently published a new book, Nepal: Between Beauty and Struggle. The book has been brought to the market by Adroit Publishers, a prominent publishing house based in India. The book is a curated collection of 76 deeply personal and reflective essays selected from more than 250 articles originally published in People’s Review, as well as ECS Magazine, Republica, and The Rising Nepal.
Drawing on eight decades of lived experience as a citizen, educator, and pioneer of Nepal’s library movement, Mishra presents a candid portrait of the nation. Beyond the familiar postcard images of towering mountains and sacred temples, the book offers an honest critique of Nepal’s social problems, cultural heritage, political decline, pervasive corruption, and institutional shortcomings. “This book is not the work of a historian or politician, but of a witness to Nepal’s journey through time—someone who has seen the country rise with hope and fall into despair,” Mishra writes in the preface. Through these essays, he attempts to portray Nepal as it truly is—not merely through its breathtaking landscapes, but also through the moral and social complexities that define the nation. The publication was made possible through the collaboration of Madhab Maharjan of Mandala Book Point in Kathmandu and Akhil Sharma of Adroit Publishers. The book features a thought-provoking foreword by Robert Palmer, preliminary formatting by the author’s granddaughter Asha Adhikari, and visual contributions from Betty Woodsend, who provided many of the photographs used throughout the book. Born in Bhaktapur in 1944, Narayan Prasad Mishra is a pioneer of modern library science in Nepal. He was the first Nepali to earn a master’s degree in library science from India. His late wife, Shanti Mishra, was the first Nepali to obtain a master’s degree in library science from the United States. Together, they dedicated decades to modernising Nepal’s academic and library infrastructure.
Shanti Mishra served as the first Chief Librarian of the Tribhuvan University Central Library and was also a renowned author. Narayan Mishra later served as the Prashasak (Chief Administrative Officer) of Tribhuvan University before opting for early retirement because of the increasing politicisation of public institutions. He currently resides in Indianapolis, USA, with his daughter and continues to write prolifically on Nepali society, governance, and culture. People’s Review का स्तम्भकार तथा वरिष्ठ शिक्षाविद् नारायणप्रसाद मिश्रको “नेपाल: सौन्दर्य र संघर्षको बिचमा शिर्षकको पुस्तक हालै प्रकाशित भएको छ। भारतको राजधानी दिल्लीमा रहेको प्रतिष्ठित प्रकाशन संस्था Adroit Publishers ले यो पुस्तक बजारमा ल्याएको हो।
यो पुस्तक पीपल्स रिभ्यु लगायत ECS Magazine, Republica र The Rising Nepal मा यसअघि प्रकाशित २५० भन्दा बढी लेखमध्ये छनोट गरिएका ७६ वटा गहन व्यक्तिगत अनुभूति र चिन्तनमा आधारित निबन्धहरूको सङ्ग्रह हो।
लेखक, शिक्षाविद् तथा नेपालको पुस्तकालय आन्दोलनका अग्रणी व्यक्तित्वका रूपमा परिचित मिश्रले आठ दशक लामो जीवन अनुभवलाई आधार बनाउँदै यस पुस्तकमा नेपालको यथार्थ चित्र प्रस्तुत गरेका छन्। अग्ला हिमाल र पवित्र मन्दिरका परिचित सुन्दर दृश्यहरूभन्दा बढी पुस्तकले नेपालको सामाजिक समस्या, सांस्कृतिक विरासत, राजनीतिक पतन, व्यापक भ्रष्टाचार तथा संस्थागत कमजोरीहरूको इमानदार आलोचना प्रस्तुत गरेको छ।
“यो पुस्तक इतिहासकार वा राजनीतिज्ञको कृति होइन, समयको प्रवाहमा नेपालको यात्राको साक्षी बनेको व्यक्तिको कृति हो—जसले देशलाई आशाका साथ उन्नति गर्दै गएको र निराशातर्फ झर्दै गएको आफ्नै आँखाले देखेको छ,” मिश्रले आफ्नो भूमिकामा लेखेका छन्।
यी निबन्धहरूमार्फत उनले नेपाललाई वास्तवमा जस्तो छ, त्यस्तै रूपमा चित्रण गर्ने प्रयास गरेका छन्—केवल मनमोहक प्राकृतिक दृश्यहरूका माध्यमबाट मात्र होइन, देशलाई परिभाषित गर्ने नैतिक तथा सामाजिक जटिलताहरूका माध्यमबाट पनि।
यस पुस्तकको प्रकाशन काठमाडौंस्थित मण्डला बुक प्वाइन्टका माधव महर्जन र एड्रोइट पब्लिशर्सका अखिल शर्माको सहकार्यबाट सम्भव भएको हो। पुस्तकमा रबर्ट पामरको गहन भूमिका, लेखककी नातिनी आशा अधिकारीले गरेको पुस्तकको प्रारम्भिक ढाँचा मिलाउने काम तथा पुस्तकभरि बेट्टी उडसेन्डबाट प्राप्त तस्बिरहरू समावेस छन्।
सन् १९४४ मा भक्तपुरमा जन्मेका नारायणप्रसाद मिश्र नेपालमा आधुनिक पुस्तकालय विज्ञानका अग्रणी व्यक्तित्व हुन्। उनी भारतबाट पुस्तकालय विज्ञानमा स्नातकोत्तर उपाधि हासिल गर्ने पहिलो नेपाली पनि हुन्। उनकी दिवंगत पत्नी शान्ति मिश्र संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिकाबाट पुस्तकालय विज्ञानमा स्नातकोत्तर उपाधि प्राप्त गर्ने पहिलो नेपाली हुन्। दुवैले नेपालको शैक्षिक तथा पुस्तकालय पूर्वाधारलाई आधुनिक बनाउन दशकौँसम्म समर्पित भएर काम गरे।
शान्ति मिश्र त्रिभुवन विश्वविद्यालय केन्द्रीय पुस्तकालयकी पहिलो प्रमुख पुस्तकालयाध्यक्ष र एक प्रख्यात लेखिका पनि हुन्। नारायण मिश्रले पछि त्रिभुवन विश्वविद्यालयमा प्रशासक (Chief Administrator) का रूपमा सेवा गरे। सार्वजनिक संस्थाहरूमा बढ्दै गएको राजनीतिक हस्तक्षेपका कारण उनले अवकाश अवधि अगावै सेवावाट अवकाश लिए।
उनी हाल संयुक्त राज्य अमेरिकाको इन्डियानापोलिसमा आफ्नी छोरीसँग बसोबास गर्दै आएका छन् र नेपाली समाज, शासन व्यवस्था तथा धर्म,संस्कृति आदि विषयमा निरन्तर आफ्नो कलम चलाइरहेका छन्।
